About Varennes

Canadian Titanium Pigments Ltd was founded in the year 1936 and started its TiO2 production in Canada in 1957. The plant is located in Varennes, on the St-Lawrence River, 20 minutes from the city of Montreal. The original plant had an annual production capacity of 13500 tons using a sulfate process system. In 1980, the company name changed to NL CHEM Canada, Inc. A chloride process system was started up in 1987. In 1989, the company name changed to KRONOS Canada, Inc. Today, the Varennes facility is the only Canadian TiO2 producer and the only Food & Pharma producer in North America. The facility has an extensive portfolio of TiO2 grades in different packaging, with an overall production capacity of 110000 tons/year.

Chloride Process

The construction of a chloride process system began in 1985, and the plant started operation in 1987 with an annual production of 36000 tons. Today, the chloride process has an annual production capacity of 90000 tons. From this production, 50000 tons are slurry which is mainly used for the paint industry.
