About KRONOS EUROPE

KRONOS EUROPE, located in Langerbrugge, near Ghent, Belgium, has been an established name in the port of Ghent for more than 65 years. Since November 1957, titanium dioxide has been produced there. In the early years the production was based on the sulfate process. In 1989 a new plant was built and since then manufacturing has been based on the chloride process.

KRONOS EUROPE has ambitious plans. One of the latest major projects was the installation of a state-of-the-art packaging line. In the coming years, the focus will be on energy transition. Numerous initiatives are in the pipeline to ensure that we can continue to produce (at least) 90,000 tons of titanium dioxide per year in a sustainable way.

Unique location near the Port of Ghent

Ores (e.g., rutile) are the main raw material for the manufacturing of titanium dioxide. These are shipped in by seagoing vessels from different parts of the world such as South Africa, Australia, and Sierra-Leone. Due to its unique location in the port, KRONOS EUROPE not only has easy access to those raw materials, but the plant is also ideally located to supply our other production sites, worldwide. Our location in the port of Ghent is also favorable for energy transition. Take, for example, the initiatives concerning the production and supply of hydrogen, the capture and transport of CO₂ and the expansion of the high-voltage network that is necessary for sustainable electrification. The port and other local industry plays an important coordinating and supporting role in this. The proximity of quality educational institutions, colleges and Ghent University is also an asset of our location in the port of Ghent. This way, we can ensure of a constant supply of knowledge and talent.

TiOCl₂ for the cosmetics industry

At KRONOS EUROPE, in parallel with titanium dioxide (TiO₂), titanium oxychloride (TiOCl₂) is also produced. KRONOS EUROPE, is one of the few producers of this niche product. Titanium oxychloride is a transparent liquid used, among others, for the manufacturing of pearlescent pigments. You can find these pigments in cosmetics.
